“FLAME SEAL’s FX-100 fire barrier coating  was used by ADtranz/DaimlerChrysler Rail Systems in Pittsburgh to pass official flame tests for plastic seats used in mass transit systems”

CURRENT NEWS ITEM:

ADtrans/DaimlerChrysler Rail Systems, North America, Inc., of Pittsburgh, has passed required fire resistance tests for plastic seats used in passenger compartments of mass rail transit systems, by using a thin coating of Flame Seal’s FX-100 product over the outer surface of the plastic. The FX-100 coating upgraded the fire resistance of the plastic seats to a level far superior to specified code requirements.

The tests involved were the ASTM-E162 and ASTM-E662 tests for flame spread and smoke generation.  The results were of such a high standard as to give ADtrans a tremendous safety margin with regard to fire resistance in the plastic seats.  As an example, the most deadly aspect of plastic is the smoke generation.  In these tests, the smoke density after 4 minutes must be less than, or equal to 200.  The untreated seat materials had a smoke density of 600.  After coating with Flame Seal’s FX-100, the test data showed the smoke density after 4 minutes was, in the worst case, reduced to 14.
