D E S C R I P T I O N
ANNEX F FLAME TESTS;
METHOD A

Ten samples of the black color* each 130 mm by 13 mm and of the smallest thickness, were used.
Five samples (Condition A) were conditioned in a forced-draft circulating-air oven for seven days(168 hours) at 70 ± 1°C , or at 10° higher  than the enclosure temperature reached during the Heating Test, whichever was higher. Immediately afterwards, they were cooled in a calcium chloride desiccator for at least 4 hours at room temperature. The other five (Condition B) were conditioned for 48 hours at 23 ± 2°C and 45% to 55% relative humidity.

Each sample was held with its longitudinal axis vertical by a clamp at  its upper end so that its lower edge was 300 mm above a flat horizontal layer of untreated surgical cotton 50 mm x 50 mm thinned out to approximately 6mm thickness.

Using a gas supply of approximately 37M J/m3 the steady blue flame from a Bunsen burner (having a 9.5 + 0.5 mm bore, a length of 100 mm) was adjusted to a height of  20 mm. The burner support was arranged to enable the burner to be quickly  removed from and precisely  returned to a position under the sample. The test flame was centered under the lower end of the sample and allowed to remain for 10 seconds, and then removed. The duration of flaming was recorded and when flaming stopped, the test flame was immediately reapplied for 10 seconds. After this second application the flaming and glowing time was recorded.

METHOD B
Identical to Method A, except ten samples of  the white color were subjected to the tests.

The duration of any glowing combustion of a sample after the second application of the test flame did not exceed 60 seconds.
The average duration of flaming did not exceed 25 seconds for each set of  five samples.
The material did not continue to burn to the holding clamp.
The surgical cotton was not ignited by particles or drops released during or after application of the test flame.
