"THE
ABSOLUTE BEST IN FIRE PROTECTION TECHNOLOGY"
THE
TREATMENTS...
1. First, spray liberally around your water heater unit. You should wet the sheetrock around the unit until the liquid runs off. This indicates that you have saturated the paper surface of the sheetrock. Spray the walls, ceiling and any wood structure that is within 18 inches of the unit in all directions. Also, spray around the vent pipe where it goes through the ceiling.
2. Next, locate the heating unit (furnace) and spray all lumber
within
3 feet of the
unit.
(Find where the gas line enters the unit for location of the flames
within
the furnace body.) Spray liberally (very wet) all framing lumber and
decking
(flooring materials & roof decking) under, around & over the
unit.
3. Finally, locate the vent pipes in the attic for both the water heater and furnace. Spray liberally on the decking 12 inches around the hole where these pipes exit through the roof. You should use up all of the Wood Seal™ on these two units and their vents. If any remains, just do additional spraying around the furnace unit until all of the Wood Seal™ is gone. (Special Note: While you are doing these treatments you should remove all flammable items from the vicinity of the furnace, water heater and their vent pipes!)
Now, you are ready to use these bottles as mixing bottles for the FABRIC SEAL™ treatments for your furniture and drapes...
FABRIC SEAL™ :
First, rinse out one of the quart bottles and place the FABRIC SEAL™ label over the WOOD SEAL™ label. (Provided in the kit.) Now you are ready to use this bottle to mix the FABRIC SEAL™ concentrate from the one gallon container. Note the graduated markings on the side of the quart bottle. They specify mix ratios of 1-1, 2-1, 3-1 and so on. (We will only be using these three marks for this product.)
Use the charts below to determine how much FABRIC SEAL™ is needed for each piece and which mix ratio to use. The mixing method is simple. As example, if you are treating a large sofa covered with a cotton/polyester blend, you will need one quart of FABRIC SEAL™ mixed at the 3-1 ratio. Therefore, you should fill the graduated bottle with FABRIC SEAL™ CONCENTRATE up to the line marked "3-1". Then, simply fill the rest up to the top ring at the neck of the bottle with distilled or filtered water. (Tap water is also fine, but if it is available, pure water is always better.) Now, all you have to do is place the trigger sprayer on top of the bottle, give it a couple of shakes, and you are ready to go!
QUANTITIES: Plan you mixing
and
use of FABRIC SEAL™ Fire
Retardant. The following information will help.
| 1 quart treats approximately: | 1 large sofa |
| or... | 1 love seat (or small sofa) + 1 stuffed chair |
| or... | 2 recliners |
| or... | 2-3 stuffed chairs |
| MATERIAL | RECOMMENDED MIX RATIO |
| "NATURAL FIBERS" | |
| COTTON | 3-1 |
| RAYON | 3-1 |
| SILK | DO NOT TREAT SILK DUE TO WATER STAINS |
| "NATURAL + SYNTHETIC BLENDS" | |
| COTTON+POLYESTER (more than 50% Cotton) | 3-1 |
| COTTON+POLYESTER (less than 50% Cotton) | 2-1 |
| RAYON+POLYESTER (more than 50% Rayon) | 3-1 |
| RAYON+POLYESTER (less than 50% Rayon) | 2-1 |
| "SYNTHETICS" | |
| 100% POLYESTER | 2-1 |
| BLENDS CONTAINING NYLON | 1-1 |
| HIGH CONTENT OF NYLON IN BLENDS | FULL STRENGTH |
UNKNOWN BLENDS: If you are not sure what kind of fabric you are dealing with, you can perform the following tests:
1. Cut away 3-4 small pieces of the fabric from the back or
bottom
of the piece
of furniture or curtains where the cut will not be seen. (There is
usually
extra fabric at some location beyond a stitch line that can be cut away
with no effect on the furniture or curtains being tested.)
2. Dip one piece in a 3-1 mixture of FABRIC SEAL™ and dry.
3. Place the flame of a match next to one end of the piece after drying. If it does not sustain a flame when the match is removed, this is the mixture to use. If it DOES flame up, then go to step 4.
4. Dip another piece of the fabric in a 2-1 mixture of FABRIC SEAL™ and dry. If that does not work, then try again with a 1-1 mixture, then finally, with full strength.
Once you have found the proper mixture to do the job, then treat according to the instructions that follow.
NOTE: Though it is rare, there are a few fabrics that will still flame after even the most concentrated treatments. On these, it is recommended that the 2-1 mix ratio be used and SATURATED DEEP into the furniture for maximum penetration INTO THE FOAM RUBBER. This will minimize the overall threat represented by that particular piece of furniture. (ALSO, you will have learned the type of fabric to AVOID in future furniture purchases!) Finally, please note that leather needs no treatment as it is naturally resistant to fire. Also, these products will not treat vinyl since such materials will not absorb. Vinyl represents a tremendous fire hazard and should be avoided.
Since you are going to be getting furniture very wet with these
chemicals,
they will require several hours to dry. Therefore, it is suggested that
these treatments be planned in the evening or just before leaving the
house
for a time. (Except bedding, which should be treated in the morning so
that drying will be complete by nightfall.)
First,
with your free hand, open up the spaces between and around the
cushions.
(This means where the cushions join each other and where cushions join
or touch the back and sides of chairs and sofas.) Spray liberally and
get
these areas very wet with FABRIC SEAL™
mixture. These are problem areas where a cigarette or match can fall
and
smolder until the piece of furniture catches on fire. When spraying in
these hidden areas, be sure to open them up enough to wet the fabric on
the sides (edges) of the cushion AND wet the fabric underneath the
cushions
in these areas as well. WHILE DOING THIS, BE SURE TO RUN YOUR HAND OVER
THE MATERIAL TO "FEEL" THAT YOU HAVE FULLY WETTED THE CLOTH AND TO RUB
THE LIQUID AT THE SAME TIME. This will assure a good treatment with
MAXIMUM
benefit! (The idea is to saturate deep enough to not only wet the outer
fabric, but also to soak into the outer layer of the FOAM RUBBER inside
the furniture since this is a major part of the fire problem and is one
of the key "DEATH FACTORS" we discussed earlier!)
Next, find all other creases & folds, open them up and treat in the same way.
Finally,
liberally spray all outer surfaces of each piece. That is, the tops,
fronts,
sides and backs of each piece of furniture. Again, the method is the
same:
Wet these surfaces very well and rub with your free hand to be sure
that
the chemical is deep within the material and that you have gotten all
areas
very wet. Then, simply allow to air dry overnight.
NOTE: If the underside of the piece is elevated higher than 2 inches off the floor, we recommend that you spray the fabric on the bottom of the piece. This is in case a child plays with matches and reaches under the furniture. The fabric that is used is usually very thin and can be quite flammable.
OTHERS: Any fabric covered chair seats / backs should also be treated in the same manner as described above, wetting the fabric thoroughly. The same is true of any other fabric that you determine may be a risk factor now that you are becoming more aware of those items that pose potential dangers to your family. THE BASIC PRINCIPLE IS SIMPLE: "CONVERT ALL KINDLING INTO NON-FLAMMABLES!"
IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT YOU PLAN TREATING THESE IN THE MORNING TO ALLOW ALL DAY TO DRY!
The mattress/boxspring sets should be sprayed AS THEY ARE PLACED in normal use. Remove all covers, sheets, etc. and spray liberally, again getting all materials VERY WET and well saturated. The areas to be sprayed are the top surface of the mattress and all four sides of the mattress and boxspring. (It is not necessary to treat the underside of the mattress or the top of the boxspring since the threat of fire starting there is almost nil.) If there are small children in the house, then the underside of the boxspring should be sprayed. This is usually a very thin fabric across the bottom of the frame of the boxspring, which is highly flammable.
These treatments will minimize the risk factors involving
children
playing with matches, cigarette lighters or other flame sources under
or
next to the bed. The underside, skirting and sides of the bed are the
sources
of the fastest fire growth. The top surface treatment of the mattress
provides
protection from accidentally dropping a match or lit cigarette on the
bed.
(The FABRIC SEAL™
saturated
into the fabric and into the foam under the fabric will add a great
deal
of additional time in which you can safely remove the flame source
before
it can affect the bed.) However, if you wish, you can add the
following....
| 1 quart will treat approximately: | 1-2 large sets of heavy curtains (with backing) |
| or... | 3-4 large sets of light curtains (without backing) |
| or... | approximately 75-80 square feet of surface area on medium weight fabrics. |
to
open up all pleats, folds, etc. in order to penetrate into all parts of
the material with FABRIC SEAL™ .
(You should be able to wet all the way through the material by spraying
only one side.) If the curtains have a backing material, then spray
them
from both sides in order to penetrate all parts of the curtain fully.
Again,
all fabrics involved in the curtains need to be well wetted with FABRIC
SEAL™ to give you the
best
protection. Allow to dry overnight.
Repeat until all curtains in your home are treated.
NOTE: THE TRASH CAN FACTOR! WHEN YOU ARE FINISHED WITH THESE TREATMENTS, ONE OF THE MAIN FIRE RISKS THAT WILL REMAIN IN YOUR HOME WILL BE TRASH CANS, SINCE THEY REPRESENT CONSTANT SOURCES OF POTENTIAL "KINDLING".
FIRST: WE SUGGEST YOU ELIMINATE ALL PLASTIC TRASH CANS INSIDE YOUR HOME. (PLASTIC WILL ALLOW THE FIRE TO SPREAD "SIDEWAYS" VERY QUICKLY BUT METAL WILL CONTAIN THE FIRE IN ONE PLACE.)
SECOND: TRY NOT TO ALLOW PLACEMENT OF TRASH CANS NEXT TO FURNITURE OR DRAPES.
FINALLY, IF YOU FEEL THAT THERE ARE ANY AREAS WHERE A TRASH CAN "MIGHT" END UP NEXT TO ANY CURTAIN OR FURNITURE, WE RECOMMEND STRONGLY THAT YOU TREAT THOSE LOCATIONS EXTREMELY HEAVILY. (TWO OR THREE COATS)
THESE AREAS WILL BECOME STIFFER AS IF THEY WERE HEAVILY STARCHED,
BUT USUALLY SUCH LOCATIONS WHERE A TRASH CAN MIGHT BE PLACED ARE AT THE
SIDES OF SOFAS OR CHAIRS WHERE NO ONE EVER "TOUCHES" THE MATERIAL
ANYWAY.
THE EXTRA TREATMENT WILL BE WELL WORTH THE EFFORT FOR THE ADDED "PEACE
OF MIND" YOU WILL GAIN.
| You may notice a slight tackiness after treating certain fabrics. This is due to too much "surface" film. Solution: Simply wipe with a damp towel and let it dry. |
Well, you have now completed one of the most important projects
you
will ever be involved in for your home and your family! Your have
achieved
what we at Flame Seal Products refer to as LEVEL ONE fire
protection.
This means that you have virtually eliminated the risk that a fire will
develop in your home due to a match, cigarette, or cigarette lighter.
Since
these are the primary ways that death by fire occurs in the home, you
can
take pride in what you have done to transform that "campfire" into a
safe,
"warm", protective and peaceful environment that a family's home should
be.
